LASER EYES
Conviction, worn in public.
On 16 February 2021, a retired US Air Force veteran posting as Chairforce put laser
eyes on the avatars of a Bitcoin meme group called The Meme Factory, and set a rule:
wear them until Bitcoin does what you say it will. The hashtag was
#LaserRayUntil100K. Within 72 hours, members of congress, celebrities
and the vast majority of ordinary holders had put them on.
It was never a price prediction. It was a costly signal — free in money, expensive in
reputation. A Schelling point with no leader and no budget. Free marketing for a network
that cannot buy attention. A uniform that made an invisible allegiance visible. A refusal
to have the argument at all. And low time preference, made wearable.
